Your Bury Interchange - Help shape plans for the new interchange in Bury
Overview
Your Bury Interchange - Help shape plans for the new interchange at Bury
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Bury Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority are working together to redevelop Bury Interchange into a modern, accessible and welcoming transport hub.
Following the success of the award-winning Stockport Interchange, Bury has been identified as the next priority and is planned to become Greater Manchester’s first carbon neutral in-operation transport hub.
The proposals would improve connections between buses, trams, walking, wheeling and cycling routes, making it easier to travel across the Bee Network and access Bury town centre.
Part of a wider plan
The redevelopment supports Bury’s Town Centre Masterplan (opens in a new window) by improving public transport facilities and supporting wider ambitions for new homes, helping to create a more active, welcoming and sustainable town centre.
Subject to future consultation and approvals, the existing interchange site would be redeveloped, with plans including:-
- A new interchange building
- A reconfigured bus station to improve bus operations and passenger facilities
- Upgraded Metrolink platforms with improved access
- Improved public spaces, including better walking, wheeling and cycling routes
- Potentially new residential apartments
The scheme is expected to be delivered in two phases. Phase one planning permission was granted in July 2025. Work is due to start in autumn 2026 and be completed in early 2028. This phase will include Metrolink platform improvements and provide a new footbridge, connecting the Metrolink tram platforms to Union Square and Pyramid Park.
Subject to future consultation and approvals, phase two would deliver the new bus interchange and residential development. Any residential apartments would remain subject to further development and approval. The existing bus interchange is expected to close for redevelopment in 2028, with the new interchange and apartments due to be completed in 2030.
Bus services will continue to run to and from Bury town centre during the redevelopment. Tram services are expected to continue for most of the works, although some temporary changes may be needed during construction. TfGM will give passengers advance notice of any changes and provide details of alternative arrangements, including bus replacement services where needed.
Your feedback will help shape the next stage of the proposals before more detailed plans are developed.
Why your views matter
The most successful projects are informed by the views of the local community, so we want to hear your feedback to help understand what is important to consider in the redeveloped Bury interchange. Many aspects of the Bury interchange redevelopment design are still being developed and decided. Your feedback today will help shape the next stage of the project and the future of Bury Interchange. A consultation is planned for winter 2026/27, before designs are then finalised and a planning application is submitted.
