Early Education & Childcare Workforce Snapshot

Overview

How to answer this survey

If you are a childminder: please complete the full survey on behalf of yourself and your assistants if you have any. If you are operating out of multiple locations, you only need to complete the survey once.

If you are part of a group or academy trust: please complete the full survey for each individual setting, repeating the survey to reflect staff at each setting. For example, if there are four settings within your group, you would complete four separate surveys.

If you are a school-based setting: please only answer on behalf of staff regularly working in the early years part of your setting. Do not include staff who only work with school-aged children, or in other parts of your school.

Why your views matter

In Greater Manchester, we recognise the role that high quality, inclusive early education and childcare plays in ensuring children have the best start in life and this is why we are committed to investing in our early years workforce.

Since September 2025 GMCA, and your local authority have been working with the Early Education and Childcare Coalition (EECC),Coram Family and Childcare and the Growth and Reform network, along with settings just like yours to understand what workforce information you would like to access.

These insights have been developed into a short survey designed to provide you with valuable insights about the local early years workforce. To help us understand if it works we need as many of you as possible to complete it and share your experiences.

Providers and childminders from Greater Manchester who have helped to shape the survey have said;

‘It sounds extremely exciting for the future of early years and for supporting our team with retention and longevity’
