Improving Journeys: Salford Crescent – MediaCityUK

Overview

Better transport is central to a growing Greater Manchester, where businesses can thrive and people can enjoy healthy, happy lives.

Through the Bee Network, we’re building a joined-up transport system that connects people with places and opportunities.

TfGM and Salford City Council are working together to improve the main route between Salford Crescent and MediaCityUK, used by the 50 bus service.

The route runs through the Salford districts of Pendleton and Langworthy before continuing into the City Centre to East Didsbury, connecting university campuses, workplaces and homes across Salford and Manchester.

We’re inviting feedback on our proposals to improve travel along the Salford Crescent to MediaCityUK corridor.

What we’re proposing

Our goal is to make everyday journeys safer, easier and more reliable and to do this we’re planning several targeted improvements along this route.

Overview map

Planned upgrades include:

  • A new bus only restriction on South Langworthy Road will prioritise buses and trams, improving journey times and making services more reliable. This increased reliability will help address existing overcrowding that is known to occur on buses using this corridor. Minor adjustments at the Regent Road / M602 / Trafford Road roundabout, including updated signal timings and road markings, will help manage traffic changes and keep vehicles moving smoothly.
  • Bus stops along the full corridor will be upgraded to improve passenger information with the introduction of Passenger Information Displays at key stops, enhanced accessibility through raising kerbs for easier boarding and alighting, installation of new shelters with seating for comfort, and improved safety by introducing safer crossing facilities nearby.
  • New pedestrian and cycle crossings will be introduced at key locations including MediaCityUK, Broadway Roundabout, Langworthy Road, and Liverpool Street. These will make everyday walking, wheeling and cycling journeys safer and easier.
  • Protected cycle tracks will be delivered along South Langworthy Road, Langworthy Road, and Liverpool Street, providing continuous, separated space for people cycling and encouraging more active travel. Protected cycle tracks ensure that all road users have their own dedicated space that is separated with a kerb or height difference.
  • Improved junctions at Broadway, Eccles New Road, Langworthy Road, and Liverpool Street to reduce delays, enhance safety, and better support all road users. There will be signal controlled pedestrian crossings, introduction of protected cycle tracks, updated road markings to optimise junction functionality and active travel integration through new pedestrian and cycle crossings.

Together, these changes will provide:

  1. Quicker, more reliable bus journeys
  2. Improved links between local transport including bus and tram stops and rail stations
  3. Safer routes for walking, wheeling or riding a bike

Funding and Phasing

This programme is supported by £23.4 million from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS). To ensure we make the best use of this investment, it is likely that the scheme will be delivered in phases.

Work undertaken to date suggests that the proposals between Eccles New Road and MediaCityUK offer the greatest potential benefits, particularly for improving transport reliability and journey times. They are also expected to have the strongest impact in encouraging more people to travel by bus, tram, walking, and cycling.

However, your views are essential. The findings from this engagement will play a key role in confirming how we prioritise the proposals and how the scheme is delivered. Your feedback will help ensure the proposals reflect local needs and deliver the greatest benefits for the community.

Why your views matter

We know that the most successful schemes are shaped by the people who use them. Your views will help us refine the proposals and deliver the greatest possible benefits.

Feedback from the first round of engagement in late 2023, has been used to directly inform the draft proposals that we are engaging on in the second round of engagement, running from 20 January to 22 February 2026. We’re asking for your thoughts on the draft proposals so we can develop a more detailed design that reflects local priorities and needs.

Once the detailed proposals have been developed, a statutory consultation will take place. You’ll be invited to share your views again at that stage.

After the statutory consultation, a full project business case will be prepared and reviewed by decision-makers to determine which parts of the scheme should go ahead. If approved, we’ll share further updates on delivery timeframes and next steps.
